13 Points in ZXD I Liq Chuan

The 13 Points in ZXD I Liq Chuan are a kind of “assembly manual” for building a correct and efficient body structure.

Imagine trying to assemble a complex mechanism without instructions. You might connect the parts, but it won’t work optimally — it will creak, jam, and quickly break under load.

The body in combat, or even in simple movement, is the same kind of mechanism. The 13 Points are exactly that manual which allows you to “assemble” the body so that it becomes a unified, powerful, and alive instrument.

So what are they actually for? Let’s break it down into the main points.

13 Points of I Liq Chuan

1. To Create Structure (Bone Alignment)

The main purpose of the points is to align the skeleton so it can receive and transmit force with minimal muscular involvement. For this, the muscles must be relaxed.

How it works

The points (for example, “the crown is suspended,” “elbows wrapping down”, “knees pointing to the big-toes”) define vectors of stretch and joint directions. When all 12 primary points are aligned correctly, body weight and external force travel through the bones straight into the ground — and back from the ground — without losses in “blocked” joints.

This is similar to an architectural arch: each stone supports the others, and the entire structure becomes incredibly stable.

2. To Achieve Relaxation (Releasing the Muscles)

This is the key paradox of internal martial arts: to be strong, you must be relaxed. But you cannot relax by sheer will. Relaxation is a consequence of correct positioning.

How it works

When a joint is misaligned (for example, a knee collapsing inward), certain muscles must constantly tense to support the body’s weight. This creates chronic tension. When you realign the knee, pelvis, or shoulder using the points, the need for this compensatory tension disappears. The muscles that previously “blocked” the structure can now let go.

Relaxation happens naturally when the body is placed in its optimal position.

3. To Awaken Flow and Work with the Fascia

When the bones are aligned and the muscles are relaxed, the conditions arise for the fascial network to function — the unified connective tissue web that surrounds all muscles and organs.

How it works

The points create conditions for simultaneous alignment of the fascia throughout the body. For example, the point “suction in the sternum” together with “opening Mingmen” creates a wave of stretch along the back.

This is what is felt as “qi” or “energy flow” — a sensation of integrated internal movement and elastic power. The 13th, final point — Yin/Yang Balance — manifests precisely when the first 12 are in place and this global fascial stretch emerges.

4. For Practical Application in Combat

All of this is not for a beautiful posture, but for real use.

How it works

Receiving force:

When someone pushes you, a properly aligned structure (thanks to the points) does not collapse. It lets the force pass through you, like a pipe lets water flow. You “absorb” the attack while remaining stable.

Issuing force:

To strike or push, you don’t need a wind-up. You use the aligned structure to instantly transmit effort from the feet, through the relaxed body, into the point of contact. This is the manifestation of Fa Jin (explosive power).

Controlling the opponent:

By feeling your own 13 points, you begin to clearly sense where the opponent’s structure is broken (for example, a tense shoulder or a twisted pelvis). This allows you to unbalance them with minimal effort.

A Simple Analogy

Imagine a tent. If all its guy lines are adjusted correctly and have equal tension, the tent is stable and does not collapse under wind or snow. If one line is too loose or too tight, the whole structure becomes distorted and unstable.

The 13 Points are exactly those “guy lines” of your body. By following them, you tune your body for maximum stability, relaxation, and readiness for action.

In Conclusion

The 13 Points are not just a list of points to memorize. They are a practical tool that allows you to:

  • Find the correct body position here and now.
  • Check yourself and detect where tension or blockage appears.
  • Correct your structure and return it to a balanced state.

Without them, I Liq Chuan practice would turn into blind wandering, where everyone interprets “relaxation” and “structure” in their own way. The points make the path conscious, tangible, and verifiable.
